Dylan
Cinnamon BunDylan is a grenoil alchemist whose brief encounters with Broccoli Bunch establish him as a practical intermediary between everyday commerce and the dangerous quest economy of the world. Working from a shop that combines an alchemical counter with a clinic, he sells supplies, explains how potions function, and directs Broccoli toward the ruined Dunwich Dungeon and its Two-Lipped Tulips. His importance lies less in battlefield power than in the way his professional knowledge converts Broccoli's gathered plants into money, equipment, and a new objective.
Identity and Introduction
Dylan first appears in an alchemist shop at an outpost south of Threewells. The establishment bears the familiar sign of a staff with spinning balls and contains both a clinic and a service window, giving the setting an unusually functional, almost commercial arrangement. A winged faerie person summons Dylan by calling him an “unprofessional oaf,” an introduction that frames him through workplace disorder before he is even seen. Dylan arrives carrying empty vials, one of which slips from a table and explodes in a crackle of glass. His physical presentation reinforces the impression of an eccentric, imperfect tradesman: he walks with a limp, and glasses perched across his froggy face make his eyes appear exceptionally large. Yet the clumsiness does not erase his competence. He immediately takes charge of the transaction and identifies himself plainly as Dylan.
Trade, Prices, and Practical Knowledge
Broccoli approaches Dylan to sell plants and other alchemical materials. Dylan examines the stems and leaves and offers twenty silver for the entire lot, a payment that noticeably improves Broccoli's very limited finances. The exchange also reveals Dylan's willingness to treat commerce as the beginning of a relationship: after naming the price, he asks whether Broccoli is human and whether humans like quests, then proposes work suited to that supposed inclination. Dylan's professional knowledge becomes especially important when Broccoli returns from the dangerous work with a large haul of flowers. Dylan counts seventy-eight specimens, acknowledges that some are damaged, and still values the unusually large delivery rather than simply penalizing its defects. His assessment presents him as exacting but not exploitative; he distinguishes quality from quantity while recognizing the effort represented by the shipment. When Broccoli suggests trading the excess plants for healing supplies, Dylan responds that lacking a good potion is foolhardy because one can mean the difference between life and death. He produces two common health potions and three trifectas, explaining that a potion's number generally indicates the percentage of impact it provides and that a skilled potion maker rounds the result down. This small lesson gives the encounter durable significance: Dylan is not merely a shopkeeper selling mysterious bottles, but one of the first figures to make the world's material systems legible to Broccoli.
The Dunwich Commission
Dylan's principal contribution to Broccoli's early journey is the commission involving the lost Dunwich Dungeon. He explains that the dungeon once stood not far from the outpost, that its remains were rediscovered after the area was settled, and that it had been destroyed long ago. Negative mana now makes the surrounding region unwelcoming, while apparitions still linger there. Dylan qualifies the danger carefully: the site is not especially dangerous, but it is not safe either. The objective is a plant called the Two-Lipped Tulip. Broccoli consults an Herbology Book after hearing the name, and Dylan admires the book while placing a value of forty silver on it. The scene therefore links botanical knowledge, commercial exchange, and exploration. Dylan's request is modest enough to be approachable, yet it sends Broccoli into a ruined and mana-tainted landscape where gathering plants is inseparable from confronting monsters and the remnants of an older catastrophe. The commission also clarifies Broccoli's position outside formal institutions. Dylan asks whether Broccoli belongs to a guild and learns that Broccoli has not yet joined one, though the Exploration Guild is a possibility. By offering a task “right up” Broccoli's alley, Dylan supplies an informal bridge toward the exploration work Broccoli hopes to pursue.
Return and Continuing Function
When Broccoli later returns in grey weather with the flowers, the cheerful inhabitants of the outpost have disappeared and the remaining people hurry through the threat of rain. Dylan is again summoned by knocks at the window of his section, and his response retains the hurried, slightly chaotic tone associated with his first appearance. He examines the haversack, expresses astonishment at the size of the haul, and begins counting it before deciding what it is worth. Dylan's role remains grounded in exchange rather than spectacle. The plants become payment; the excess becomes a means of obtaining health potions; and his warning about preparation retrospectively emphasizes the hazards Broccoli has survived. Through these transactions, he repeatedly turns the protagonist's improvised collecting into usable resources. His shop is a threshold where dangerous field experience is translated into currency, equipment, and information.
Narrative Role and Significance
Dylan occupies a small but structurally important place in the narrative. The broader story repeatedly presents invisible systems that issue quests, award experience, unlock abilities, and convert actions into measurable advancement: the initial summons announces that an evil root has set itself in the world; cleaning in accordance with Broccoli's class unlocks the Cleaning skill; defeating three Sentinel Ghosts grants bonus experience and raises the Cinnamon Bun class to level 1; and completing the Evil Root quest produces the declaration that the world thanks Broccoli for the sacrifice. Dylan's commission belongs to this same machinery, but it is mediated by a living professional rather than by a floating menu. That contrast makes Dylan especially useful. The system can label a task and reward an outcome, but Dylan explains the physical economy that makes survival possible. He knows what flowers are worth, how many were gathered, how potion numbers translate into effect, and why healing supplies matter. He also gives Broccoli a quest without requiring prior guild membership, allowing an unaffiliated wanderer to acquire purpose before formal belonging. Dylan's awkwardness, from the broken vial to the limp and oversized glasses, keeps this instructional function from becoming solemn. He is neither a grand mentor nor a heroic combatant; he is a working alchemist whose messy shop, precise counting, and blunt safety warning make the adventure's systems tangible. In that limited but essential capacity, he helps transform Broccoli Bunch's movement through the world from accidental wandering into an increasingly organized life of quests, trade, and exploration.
